Self-Guided Kayak Trips

Many of our customers enjoy the freedom and independence of a self-guided trip. These are a few of our favorite kayak day adventure routes around Juneau. For a fun, affordable, and safe wilderness experience, we recommend that you have previous kayak knowledge and experience when going self-guided.

Mendenhall Glacier Lake

The Mendenhall Glacier sits in the Tongass National Forest and melts into a protected lake surrounded by mountains and waterfalls. Paddle within two-hundred yards of the terminus for extraordinary photo opportunities, and see for yourself why this is one of the most popular destinations in Alaska

Berner's Bay Estuary

Enjoy our scenic 45-mile drive “out the road” to echo cove. This estuary has sand, grass, and rocky beaches with many freshwater stream outlets that salmon and other fish like to feed and spawn in. There are a variety of sea birds and land & marine mammals that frequent this area. Check out the Tlingit petroglyphs and hike to a majestic waterfall just off the coastline. This trip is suitable for all ability levels, and an interpretive guide can be hired for an additional fee.

St. James Bay Marine Park

This giant bay can only be accessed by water taxi that travels through the humpback whale feeding grounds and a sea lion haul-out. Dahl porpoise are often seen at the entrance of St. James, and once inside the protected waters, there are many islands and beaches to explore. Take a quick hike to limestone inlet via a short trail. This trip is suitable for all ability levels.

Admiralty Island National Monument

Paddle into Kootznawoo, “the fortress of the bears”, and even if you don’t encounter one of our resident brownies you’re sure to see evidence. Gain a firsthand glimpse into life on Admiralty Island during a ¾ mile boardwalk to Seymour canal. Explore old growth forest, tranquil peat-bogs, and giant tidal flats where birds, plants, and animals thrive. This trip is suitable for intermediate to advanced paddlers, and must be accessed via water-taxi.
